Premium lenses – the right intraocular lens for your eye

Five lens concepts, one aim: the lens that suits your eye and your everyday life.

What is this about?

In every cataract operation the clouded natural lens is replaced by an artificial lens. Which artificial lens that is largely determines how you will see afterwards: at distance only, at several distances, with or without compensation for astigmatism. This is exactly where premium lenses come in.

What does the choice depend on?

Not on price, but on your eye and your life: cornea (shape, regularity, thickness), retina and macula, optic nerve, degree of astigmatism, pupil size, tear film – and your occupation, your reading habits, how much you drive at night. That is why a complete examination always comes first, not a catalogue.

How does the consultation work?

We measure your eye (biometry), assess the retina and cornea and talk about your everyday life. We then tell you openly which lenses make sense for your eye – and which we would not recommend to you. You decide without time pressure, with a written cost breakdown.

What about the costs?

The medically necessary operation with a standard monofocal lens is covered by statutory health insurance. Premium lenses are additional services; we tell you the extra costs transparently and in writing beforehand. For privately insured patients we clarify this individually.

What happens after the operation?

Both eyes are operated on at separate appointments. After the first operation we check the result and can adjust the planning for the second eye. Follow-up checks take place at your local practice.

Risks & limits – said openly

No lens guarantees freedom from glasses, and no lens is the best one for every patient. Multifocal concepts can affect contrast and night vision (halos, glare); toric lenses must sit precisely on axis. Whether your eye is suitable for a particular lens is decided by the clinical findings – not by preference.

The five lens concepts in detail

From the proven standard lens to the trifocal lens – with advantages and limits.

Standard monofocal lens (spherical)

One fixed focal length. The lens focuses light at exactly one distance – usually set for distance vision.

No correction of astigmatism, no sharp vision at several distances

Aspheric lens with blue-light filter

An aspheric shape for a more even image right out to the edge; an integrated filter reduces short-wave light.

Advantages
Slightly better contrast and twilight vision than spherical lenses; the filter is similar to the natural lens
Limitations
Does not correct astigmatism; still only one distance in focus
Need for glasses
Reading glasses as a rule required

May suit you if …
If good twilight vision matters to you, for example when you drive frequently

Toric lens

Additionally ground along one axis and therefore matched to the curvature of your cornea (astigmatism).

One focal range, but markedly less distorted
Advantages
Can also compensate for pronounced astigmatism – often clear outlines for the first time
Limitations
Must sit precisely on axis; repositioning is rare but possible
Need for glasses
Reading glasses as a rule required

May suit you if …
With relevant regular astigmatism

EDOF lens (extended depth of focus)

Stretches the zone of sharpness instead of splitting the light between two separate focal points.

Distance and intermediate range (screen, dashboard, price tag)
Advantages
Good contrast, as a rule fewer light phenomena than multifocal lenses
Limitations
Small print at close range often stays blurred
Need for glasses
Reading glasses often needed for small print
Light phenomena
Halos possible, usually milder than with multifocal lenses
May suit you if …
If you want independence from glasses in everyday life and at the screen, and can accept reading glasses

Multifocal or trifocal lens

Distributes the incoming light between two or three focal points – distance, intermediate range and near.

Advantages
The best chance of largely doing without glasses in many everyday situations
Limitations
Contrast may decrease slightly; adaptation can take weeks to months
Need for glasses
Often barely needed – there is no guarantee

Halos and glare around light sources, especially at night, considerably more frequent
May suit you if …
With a healthy macula and optic nerve, a regular cornea and a strong wish for independence from glasses
