Macula centre & intravitreal injections

Medication delivered into the eye with fixed protocols and predictable appointments.

What is this about?

An intravitreal injection means that a medicine is delivered under sterile conditions directly into the vitreous body of the eye. This way the active substance reaches the retina exactly where it is needed.

When are intravitreal injections used?

Above all in wet age-related macular degeneration, in diabetic macular oedema and in retinal vascular occlusions. The aim is to stabilise vision – often over a series of treatments.

How does the treatment work?

The injection is given as an outpatient procedure at the Stadtmitte surgery centre, after anaesthetic drops and thorough disinfection. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. We then monitor progress regularly with OCT.

What matters afterwards?

Do not drive yourself on the day of treatment and do not rub the eye. If you experience increasing pain, marked redness or deteriorating vision after the injection, please contact us immediately.

Risks & limits – said openly

Inflammation, bleeding or a rise in pressure can occur rarely. Because the treatment usually has to be repeated, we place great emphasis on predictable, well-organised appointments.
