Squint, lazy eye and prescribing glasses for children.

What is this about?

Children’s eyes are still developing – and some visual impairments can only be treated well during childhood. The earlier a lazy eye (amblyopia) or a squint is detected, the better the outlook.

When should a child see an ophthalmologist?

With a visible squint, screwing up one eye, reading or watching television very close up, frequent stumbling – and generally for a check-up if squint or strong refractive errors run in the family.

How do we examine?

In a child-friendly way and without pressure: a vision test, examination of eye alignment and how both eyes work together, plus a precise determination of the spectacle prescription, usually with eye drops.

Which treatments are available?

Depending on the findings, glasses, temporarily patching one eye (occlusion) or further measures. We follow the development with regular check-ups.

Risks & limits – said openly

If a lazy eye is treated too late, it may persist. So the rule is: better to have an early check-up.
