Cataract surgery
Surgery in our own operating centre, as an outpatient and usually under local anaesthetic.
What is this about?
In a cataract the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. During the operation the clouded lens is removed and replaced by a clear artificial lens. It is one of the most frequently performed procedures in medicine.
Who is the operation suitable for?
For people whose everyday life is noticeably restricted by the clouding of the lens – for example when reading, driving, or through glare. The right moment is determined jointly by the clinical findings and how you feel about it.
How does the diagnostic work-up proceed?
Before the operation we measure your eye precisely (biometry), examine the retina and cornea and discuss with you which artificial lens suits your eye and your everyday life.
How does the operation work?
The procedure is performed as an outpatient at the Stadtmitte surgery centre, as a rule under local anaesthetic with drops. It usually takes only a few minutes; with preparation and post-operative observation, please allow several hours. The eyes are operated on at two separate appointments.
Which goals are realistic?
The aim is to regain the visual quality lost through the clouded lens. Whether you will need glasses afterwards depends on the lens chosen and on your eyes – we discuss this openly with you beforehand.
Before and after the operation
On the day of surgery you must not drive yourself; please arrange for someone to accompany you. After the procedure you apply eye drops according to a schedule for several weeks. We carry out the check-ups at your local practice.
Risks & limits – said openly
Like every procedure, cataract surgery carries risks, for example inflammation, a rise in pressure or – rarely – a retinal detachment. We explain everything to you personally and calmly before the operation.
