Glaucoma: monitoring & therapy
Early detection, monitoring and therapy – conservative, by laser or surgical.
What is this about?
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve – often over many years and initially without symptoms. A common risk factor is excessively high intraocular pressure. Left untreated, permanent visual field loss can develop.
How do we make the diagnosis?
By measuring intraocular pressure, assessing the optic nerve, examining the visual field and performing OCT. This allows us to detect changes early and to compare progression objectively over many years.
Which treatments are available?
Therapy usually starts with pressure-lowering eye drops. If that is not enough – or if the drops are poorly tolerated – SLT may be an option. If the pressure remains too high, surgical procedures including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) are available.
SLT – selective laser trabeculoplasty
A gentle laser procedure that improves the natural drainage of aqueous humour through the trabecular meshwork and thereby lowers intraocular pressure. It is performed as an outpatient, takes only minutes, only takes effect over several weeks and can usually be repeated. Important: afterwards you may only change your pressure-lowering eye drops on medical instruction. SLT treatments are carried out in Stadtmitte and Styrum.
What can you do yourself?
Take your drops regularly and attend your monitoring appointments – even if you do not notice anything. That is precisely what matters in glaucoma.
Risks & limits – said openly
Damage that has already occurred to the optic nerve cannot be reversed. The aim of every therapy is therefore to preserve the vision you have over the long term.
