Blepharoplasty – upper and lower eyelid lift
Eyelid surgery for functional or aesthetic reasons – after an ophthalmological assessment.
What is a blepharoplasty?
In a blepharoplasty, excess skin – sometimes also fatty tissue – is removed from the upper or lower eyelid. On the upper lid this is known as hooded eyelids, on the lower lid often as eye bags.
Functional or aesthetic?
Functional: when slack upper lids narrow the upper visual field, push the lashes into the eye or chronically irritate the lid skin. Aesthetic: when the wish for a more awake appearance is the priority. Both are legitimate – the distinction matters because only the functional component can justify reimbursement.
Why an ophthalmological assessment first?
Because the eyelid protects the eye. We check the tear film, corneal surface, lid closure, lid margin position and – for a functional indication – the visual field. A dry eye or incomplete lid closure changes the planning considerably.
How does the procedure work?
As an outpatient under local anaesthetic. The incision follows the natural lid crease so that the scar is barely noticeable later. After the procedure you cool the lid; sutures are usually removed after about a week.
What is realistic?
A calmer, more open appearance of the lid and – with a functional indication – a freer upper visual field. Not realistic: a different face, or the disappearance of dark circles or fine lines outside the lid.
The healing phase
Swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days and subside over one to two weeks. We discuss sport, sauna and blood-thinning medication individually. The final result becomes apparent over several weeks.
Risks & limits – said openly
Swelling, bruising, temporarily dry eyes, asymmetries and visible scars are possible; rarely wound healing problems or incomplete lid closure. The procedure is not suitable with pronounced dry eye, untreated lid margin inflammation, unrealistic expectations or unstable general illnesses. We do not make before-and-after promises.
